Kenyon Summer Seminar

Seeing the World: Travel and Travel Writing

Instructor: P. F. Kluge, Writer in Residence, Kenyon College

First came the years of discovery and exploration. Next came the great age of travel writing, roughly from 1800 to 1850. After that, and to this day, the age of tourism presents a variety of possibilities and predicaments, which P.F. Kluge has contended with in numerous books and articles. This course will evaluate writing that is experiential—the account of a trip—and we'll examine pieces—"think pieces"—that are comparative and thoughtful. Travel writing is at times inviting, frustrating and exhilarating, and this course will include trip preparation, reporting strategies, digressions, lucky breaks—all the experiences of travel…and travel writing.
